Ali's son detained, grilled in US

THE son of boxing legend Muhammad Ali was detained at a Florida airport and repeatedly asked by immigration staff "Are you Muslim?”, a lawyer has said.

Chris Mancini told the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky, the incident happened as Muhammad Ali Jnr, 44, and his mother Khalilah Camacho-Ali, the second wife of the late Ali, were arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on February 7 from Jamaica.

Mr Mancini said officials questioned Mr Ali for nearly two hours, repeatedly asking him, "Where did you get your name from?” and "Are you Muslim?”

Mr Ali was born in Philadelphia and holds a US passport.

Ms Ali was released after showing a photo of herself with her late ex-husband, Mr Mancini said.

Mr Ali Jnr confirmed his Muslim faith and told officials he was Ali's son and a native-born US citizen, Mr Mancini said, but was still detained for two hours.
