VIDEO: All smiles for 60 and Better program
THERE'S no need to be lonely when you've got 60 and Better.
Well that's how Rockhampton's Daphne Bridson feels anyway after being in the local seniors group for the past four years.
60 and Better is a program aimed at supporting elderly people in social, physical and emotional aspects of their life.
The Rockhampton program has been operating for 24 years and is one of 24 programs across the state.
Daphne, 81, (pictured) joined the program four years ago and has never looked back.
"It's the best thing that's ever happened to me, it's my life now," she said. "When you retire and you lose your partner, you're alone and you've got nothing but by joining this program I now have a life and a new family.
"Loneliness is a big issue when you're older and it's easy to just keep to yourself but there's no need to be lonely when you've got a program like this and a place to go to socialise.
"Sometimes I think we're closer as a group than what we are with our own families because you've got friendship."
Program manager Anita Griffiths said the group had more than 50 members.
"We're funded by the Department of Communities to provide healthy, fun activities for the seniors in the community," she said.
"We try to assist with social isolation so we provide social gatherings, annual holidays, exercise workshops and information mornings to discuss information about issues that impact seniors.
"Being socially connected when you're older is extremely important because once they lose their social network, they tend to eventually lose everything else."
