Alleged armed robber uses scissors to slice teen's ear

UPDATE: A man has been charged over the alleged armed robbery and assault of two teenage boys in Varisty Lakes on the Gold Coast.

The alleged attacker used scissors to cut off the bottom half of a 16-year-old boy's ear lobe before throwing it in the canal along with some of the boys' property.

The 18-year-old Varsity Lakes man has been charged with two counts each of armed robbery, deprivation of liberty, common assault and one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates court on Wednesday morning.

EARLIER: Police are scouring a Gold Coast canal for part of a 16-year-old boy's ear lobe cut off during a violent armed hold-up.

The boy was walking along a street in Varsity Lakes, near Bond University, with a friend when a man approached the pair.

"This person has basically struck up a conversation with the juveniles and in some manner intimidated them into going down a nearby alleyway," Regional crime coordinator Superintendent Dave Hutchinson said.

"He has demanded money and subsequently he has led them down to a jetty which leads out onto the canal.

"There has been further intimidation and at some point he has produced a firearm."

The alleged attacker used scissors to cut off the bottom half of the 16-year-old's ear lobe before throwing it in the canal along with some of the boys' property.

Police say the man got away with some cash and a mobile phone.

The injured teen was taken to Robina Hospital for treatment.

Police divers searched a canal at Varsity Lakes on Tuesday and found a pair of scissors.

"The situation as it has been explained to us at the moment is very concerning," Supt Hutchinson said.

The attacker is described as being Pacific Islander in appearance, solid to heavy build around 188cm tall and short, black hair.
