Angler follows in dad's footsteps

TWENTY-eight years after his father Allan won the Australian Angling Championships, 14-year-old Ashley Cannon has followed in his footsteps by claiming a national fishing title.

Cannon scooped the junior awards pool at the Australian Angling Championships held at South West Rocks last week. He was crowned the Junior National Angling Champion and the Junior Convention Champion – the highest honour awarded in junior competition fishing in Australia.

And in a bonanza for the Yamba Fishing Club, fellow member Karen Margetts also claimed the national women’s title.

“Karen has only been competition fishing for the past two years, so it is a remarkable achievement for her to hold her own and win the overall championship ahead of 20 more seasoned competitors,” former national champion and regular Daily Examiner fishing correspondent Mark Smith said.

“It’s a strong club in Yamba and locally we always seem to produce some very good competition anglers.

“With such great fishing available it would be disappointing not to I suppose.”

Ashley Cannon is more content to let his rod do the talking, but his father Allan was ecstatic with his son’s achievements, which Smith also described as exceptional.

“Ashley won the estuary category, the casting competition, and the rock and beach discipline with a bag limit of very large tailor to boot,” Smith said.

“He performed very creditably in all disciplines and after also helping team New South Wales to victory in the state competition was the only choice for the Junior Convention Champion.”

Smith also competed at the championships, finishing fifth in the national men’s division.

Smith rates preparation and experience as the most crucial aspects of competition fishing and says luck plays only a small role.

“I think you make your own luck in fishing. A lot of the time it is the best prepared that achieve the results.”
