Angry man knifes bouncer

MACKAY: South African-born Ziyaad Whittaker faces possible deportation from Australia after serving 80% of an eight-year jail sentence for stabbing a nightclub security officer in the back in a dark laneway.

Whittaker, 21, came to Mackay in 2004 with his parents and two brothers and he finished Year 12 in 2007.

His family left South Africa after he was assaulted as a teenager, beaten and robbed of his clothes, school bag and mobile phone and slashed in the face with a broken beer bottle while walking through a squatters’ camp.

Whittaker and his brother were involved in an altercation at a Mackay nightclub with his brother’s female partner and one of her male friends and all four of them were ejected by security officers.

The altercation, abuse, pushing and shoving continued on the footpath so security officer 30-year-old Trent Turnbull ordered Whittaker to leave the area. As he walked off Whittaker said: “We’re coming back to get you, you fat (expletive).”

About two hours later Whittaker stalked Turnbull, waiting in ambush for him to finish work and walk down a dark, unlit laneway. His face covered by a hood, Whittaker stabbed Turnbull twice in the back.

Whittaker pleaded guilty in the District Court yesterday to intentionally doing grievous bodily harm to Trent Turnbull on March 8 this year.
