Sequel is one of this year's most colourful animated films

THEY may be dismissed as "kids stuff" but animated movies are often far more imaginative - and funny - than their adult counterparts.

The original Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was loved by audiences of all ages and now its sequel is sure to unleash everyone's inner child.

Cloudy 2 begins directly after the first film's "food storm", with young inventor Flint Lockwood (voice of Bill Hader) and his friends relocated to the city of San Franjose while their island home is restored to liveable condition.

But after months in the city, the Swallow Falls citizens start to wonder why they still haven't been allowed to go home.

The answer is revealed by sinister Live Corp CEO Chester V (Will Forte) - Flint's "food machine" is still functioning, and Swallow Falls has been overrun with mutant food creatures.

Like its predecessor, Cloudy 2 features an impressive voice cast, including Annis Faris (Scary Movie) as weathergirl Sam Sparks, James Caan as Flint's fisherman father Tim Lockwood and Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) as monkey Steve.

While the first film was clearly an animated parody of Hollywood disaster movies, this follow-up is much more reminiscent of the Jurassic Park films.

Children will love the array of bizarre "foodimals" on display, such as tacodiles, shrimpanzees, flamangoes, giant strawberries and cheeseburger spiders - although adults might find the endless food puns a bit tiring.

One foodimal, Barry the strawberry, is so painfully adorable that the producers could probably make a fortune if they released a stuffed toy version.

So bright and colourful it's like a rainbow exploded in your brain, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 probably isn't this year's best animated film, but its definitely one of the most memorable.
