Anna Meares wins Australia's first gold medal in Glasgow
ANNA Meares has become Australia's most successful female track cyclist at the Commonwealth Games with gold on the first day of competition in Glasgow.
Her gold medal in this morning's 500 metres individual trial in Glasgow was the fifth of her career, and has seen her surpass her idol Kathy Watt's haul of four.
"I'm very proud and I think Kathy would be very proud as well," Meares said.
"She was the lady who introduced me to cycling through the TV, watching the Commonwealth Games, and to be here and to do that is an honour."
The 30-year-old set a new Games record time in the last heat to edge out compatriot Steph Morton and England's Jess Varnish.
