Anni finds inspiration at The Mill Gallery
WITH creativity on the brain and Frida Kahlo on her shirt, Anni Simmons was right at home at the "Art to Wear with Heart" workshop at The Mill Gallery in Yeppoon yesterday.
The aim of the program was to teach participants how to upcycle and re-use existing clothing.
"The freedom to go cut something up, and if you cut it the wrong way it doesn't matter because you can still do something with it; I feel really inspired," Anni said.
Anni quit her nursing profession four years ago to pursue her creative interest in textiles and design.
She was one of six to attend yesterday's workshop, one of two run by the Gallery and Keppel Coast Arts, under the guidance of Brisbane upcycler and natural fibre champion Jane Milburn.
The first workshop, "Reworked T-shirts", was held on Monday.
Anni said it was the perfect opportunity to get motivated after recovering from knee surgery.
"It is really good to come and see Jane and how creative she is and kick-start my own creativity."
Jane said it was important to re-use existing clothing in sustainable ways.
"Groove them up and re-use what you have... it's creative but it's imperfect, and we embrace the imperfection... there's nothing like it in the world," Jane said.
The workshops return again on July 6 and 7, just in time for the school holidays.
