Another shooting at Virginia Tech

TWO people have been shot dead by a gunman on the Virginia Tech campus, the scene of the United States' deadliest shooting.

The campus, in Blacksburg, Virginia, is on lockdown after shots were heard coming from the Coliseum car park around 12.37pm local time (6.37am NZT).

The gunman remains on the loose and other schools in the area also remain on lockdown.

The university said in a statement a Virginia Tech police officer was shot and killed after he stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall.

The gunman then fled, shooting another person at the Cage parking lot near Duck Pond Drive.

That person is also reported to have died.
