Anti-terror raids in Melbourne after Monday's incident

POLICE are carrying out anti-terror raids in Melbourne's northern suburbs this morning, confirming an operation in Ascot Vale was under way.

A police statement said: "Victoria Police and their partners within the Joint Counter Terrorism Team are conducting a police operation in the northern suburbs this morning. As this relates to an ongoing investigation, it is not appropriate to comment further.

"The safety of the community and our members is paramount and more information will be released when it is safe to do so."

Officers were seen searching bins in an inner northern Melbourne suburb early this morning, according to a caller to 3AW.

Premier Daniel Andrews told Sky News a number of warrants were being executed and they were in relation to the "tragic events at Brighton on Monday".
