TOOWOOMBA'S mayor said he had been left "almost numb" in the wake of yesterday's fatal stabbing at Newtown.

Cr Paul Antonio said both yesterday's deaths and Sunday's double fatal car crash on Ruthven St had shocked him, but Toowoomba remained a safe place to live.

"I can't explain why two incidents would happen in such close proximity, no-one ever would be able to explain, except to feel very sad about it," he said.

"The tragic fatal accident the other day brought home to me all of our vulnerability.

>> Teen accused of butchering mother, 12-year-old sister to face court today

>> City reeling after mum and daughter stabbed in death in their home

>> Man charged over Australia Day double fatal remanded in custody

>> Disability support worker killed in Gore Highway truck crash

"This morning's stabbing is very, very sad indeed - I think these domestic incidents leave us wondering and dismayed.

"Our thoughts and prayers have got to be with all of those who are impacted.

"I think Toowoomba is a very safe place and a very good place to live, and …we're very fortunate to live here.

"At times like this, we need to step back a little bit and look at stats and look at community reaction to the incidents."

Cr Antonio said it would be difficult to find a community that did more to combat domestic violence than Toowoomba.

He will hold a road safety forum next month in partnership with the Queensland Police Service and the Department of Traffic and Main Roads.
