DR TALITHA Best explains that while everyone experiences stress throughout their life, an anxiety disorder goes beyond that experience.
Dr Best is a senior lecturer in psychology at the School of Human, Health and Social Sciences at CQUniversity.
She said that most people had felt uneasy in certain situations.
"A lot of people have had that uncomfortable feeling, where you get angsty and anxious, these are perfectly normal feelings," she said.
"Most people have experienced an anxious response, where they feel their heart racing or become more emotionally reactive to situations than they normally would."
But Dr Best said an anxiety disorder developed these feelings to the point where a person was unable to function normally.
If this persists, she suggests seeking professional help or contacting organisations such as beyondblue.
"Beyondblue is an access point to services, so having it available to those that are in distress is very important," she said.
She also reminds people of the need for empathy when dealing with those who are suffering.
"It is very important that people are aware that other individuals suffer from symptoms and experiences that extend beyond what we may find in normal life experiences," she said.
