$12.9m pool set to cause a splash

By DARRYN NUFER

ROCKHAMPTON City Council has unveiled an exciting vision for a $12.9 million upgrade of the Southside Memorial Swimming Pool.

Imagine strolling along a Fitzroy River boardwalk, sitting down to a kiosk coffee while looking out over the water ? all while kids splash in a learn-to-swim pool nearby.

Imagine then walking next door to a new Olympic pool, surrounded by grandstands, capable of hosting major swimming and diving events.

In winter, also imagine being able to use undercover, heated swimming facilities.

These possibilities are all included in a comprehensive study and master plan just completed by council consultant Strategic Leisure.

"They would certainly add a very pleasant ambience to Rocky's most important asset, the Fitzroy River,'' Rockhampton City Councillor John Broad said yesterday.

The council has given in-principle support to a major three-stage upgrade of the outdated and crumbling facility.
