A big new town centre
By NATALIE SMITH
YEPPOON and Emu Park will soon have commercial competition from another growing centre on the Capricorn Coast.
Great Barrier Reef International Resort developer Chris Dadson has unveiled plans for a town centre at his Zilzie-based resort.
Under Mr Dadson's proposal, the town centre would include a 2500 square metre supermarket, a 2000 square metre department store, a 1000 square metre commercial area, 1000 square metres of boutique retail as well as al fresco cafes and restaurants.
The proposal will also include cinemas, a squash, bowling and health club facility, a tavern, offices and a site maintenance area.
A dollar value has not been put on the town centre proposal, but the net worth of the development to date is estimated to be about $1.3 billion. "Everything earned is turned back into the project and reinevested,'' Mr Dadson said.
Mr Dadson said the master plan also incorporates 220 luxury retirement apartments adjacent to a large medical facility centre and pharmacy.
Livingstone Shire Mayor Bill Ludwig said the shopping centre proposal would add more variety at the southern end of the Capricorn Coast. "It's effectively a neighbourhood shopping centre,'' he said.
"I don't think it will have a major impact to the Emu Park central business district.''
Mr Dadson said construction of the town centre would probably start early next year.
