A Broad swipe at expo

THE battle to retain Beef Australia in the beef capital continued to rage yesterday with Rockhampton City Councillor John Broad questioning whether any more ratepayer dollars should be spent on the expo.

His comments follow reports last week Rockhampton may lose the expo to Toowoomba after 2006.

Cr Broad yesterday said the council could not afford to keep giving "handouts'' to keep the expo in CQ.

"I don't believe we should be giving them so much ratepayers' money when our finances are tight and we're trying to make the city a better place,'' he said.

"They want a better deal or they won't be here in 2009.''

Cr Broad believed the Federal Government had given Beef 2006 $2.1 million, while the council had offered $30,000.

He said the council had given a total of $302,000 to Beef Australia over the years, $150,000 of which was given to Beef 2003.

Cr Broad sought the event's economic benefit to Rockhampton before offering more money to keep it in the city in 2009.
