A game?s ups and downs
By RACHAEL BORICH
GLADSTONE soccer club BITS have experienced the highs and lows in a night of football.
BITS broke into the Capricornia Soccer League first division top four with a comprehensive 6-1 win over Bluebirds United at the BITS home ground on Saturday night.
However, they also lost key striker John Martin with a serious knee injury.
Play was stopped for about 15 minutes while Martin was stretchered off the field late in the first half.
Martin had already caused havoc earlier in the game scoring the opening two goals with a header into the goal followed by a one-on-one goal against the Bluebirds goalkeeper.
BITS coach Grant Nicolson said last night he was unsure of how serious the injury was.
Martin sat out last season after a knee reconstruction ? he has damaged that same knee.
Nicolson will look to BITS's star player from the weekend Lee Veenhoven to fill the void.
BITS have welcomed a return to form after the club suffered one of its worst defeats two rounds back with an 11-0 loss to Frenchville.
The BITS victory capped off a night of celebrations for the Gladstone clubs with all three ? BITS, Central and Clinton ? securing victories over their respective Rockhampton opposition.
Meanwhile, Frenchville's Nick Barker continued his goal scoring spree with a further three goals in his team's 4-1 victory over Southside United at Ryan Park on Saturday night.
Round 10 (June 4) ? Bluebirds United v Southside United (Webber Park), CQU Berserker v Cap Coast (Elizabeth Park), Central v Clinton (Central), Frenchville v Nerimbera Brothers (Ryan Park), Parkana v BITS (Parkana).
