Applewaite snares bag of wickets

VETERAN all-rounder Kel Applewaite claimed a fivewicket haul to put Frenchville in a strong position in their round four Southern Star Sports Shield clash at the Rockhampton Cricket Grounds on Saturday.

Applewaite snared 5/15 (10 overs) to leave Gracemere in trouble at 9/76 when rain stopped play at tea.

After winning the toss, Gracemere made a confident start before Frenchville paceman Shaun Collins inflicted a double blow with two quick wickets to remove Brendan Molloy (7 runs) and David Hawkes (5).

From that point, Applewaite ripped through the Gracemere middle-order, with opener Aaron Clews (22) the only batsman to offer any resistance.

At Jardine Park, the CQU Tigers will resume at 2/112 in their rain-affected match against Bluebirds.

Tigers captain Steve McDonald (28) and Robin Adams (31) took full advantage of the batsmen friendly conditions and will be looking for quick runs from their remaining overs this Saturday.

At Kalka Shades, Cap Coast are on track for their first win of the season after their bowlers destroyed Brothers.

The defending champions were 8/101 when play was abandoned, with young seamer Stuart Keene taking three wickets.
