Barker striking up new Cougars goals

By AARON KELLY

TRIKER Nick Barker is ready to pounce on this year's Football Queensland State Cup.

Barker, 24, will join the Frenchville Sports Club Capricorn Cougars opening trial game against Townsville in Mackay tonight.

Just 12 months ago the Frenchville striker was on the comeback trail from a serious knee injury and missed the Cougars' inaugural campaign.

Barker returned to his attacking best during the Capricornia Soccer League 2005 season, leading Frenchville to the Wesley Hall Cup and forcing his way into the Cougars squad.

Barker said he was looking forward to his next challenge.

"You go well locally but you always want to test yourself against the best players in the State,'' Barker said.

Barker will team-up with Nerimbera Brothers captain Michael Steere in an exciting forward partnership.

Cougars coach Justin Kilshaw said the new-look combination was looking the goods.

"Nick is new to the squad and he's added a new dimension upfront,'' Kilshaw said.

"We've had a better preparation this year and the boys are ready ? bring it on.''

Cougars ? Ben Blacker, Tim Hickey, Craig Porter, Lindsay Dean, Chris Hill, Kenny Robertson, Roy Bob, Clayton Rowland, Chris Griffin, Nick Barker, Michael Steere. Reserves: Tristan Fraser, Cameron Draper, Darren Jeffries, Matt Carrigg, Ben Parker. Coach: Justin Kilshaw.
