Bashed, robbed, living in fear
A ROCKHAMPTON woman, 34, is in shock today after she was brutally attacked and robbed in the city heart.
The woman, who was too afraid to be identified, said she could not sleep and was still shaken up after the incident.
About 6.30pm on Wednesday she had been waiting to attend a women's support group meeting on the corner of Derby and Bolsover streets.
"I decided to go to a women's group meeting and got there a bit early,'' she said.
"I was waiting in the parking lot when this fellow approached me.''
She said her attacker was a man aged between 28 and 31.
He came up to her and asked for a cigarette. After she refused he began asking her for money.
"He started to get really belligerent and then I got belligerent,'' she said.
"He then grabbed a hold of my purse and tried to take it.''
The two struggled with the purse for a short period. Then he began punching and kicking her.
"He hit me square on the arm and I dropped the bag,'' she said.
"He just took off towards the river.''
Because of this incident she said she would never go out alone in Rockhampton again.
"I've lived in some pretty tough places, but this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me,'' she said.
"I think it is due to the city's inadequate lighting.'' Police are investigating.
