Beaten at the buzzer
By RACHAEL BORICH
THE Rockhampton Stadium Nightclub Rockets must now re- group for another big home game this Sunday after letting the Cairns Marlins off the hook at Hegvold Stadium on Satur- day night.
Rocket Michael Hart missed a three-point attempt for victory in the dying seconds to give a late-rallying Cairns outfit an 85- 83 win.
"I didn't know how long there was on the clock and just rushed it (the shot) a little bit,'' Hart said.
"It's disappointing to lose, but you can't dwell on it ? you just have to work towards the next game.''
Hart said one area to work on at practice this week would be better executing the offence and making the defence work harder.
The Rockets shot out to a 10- point lead at half time, but this game was always in the balance.
Missed lay-ups from Darren Richardson and Tony Campbell, under some questionable non- foul calls, proved costly late in the third quarter while lanky Cairns centre Tim Berendorff sunk a massive three-pointer on the buzzer to give the Rockets only a three-point buffer enter- ing the final quarter.
Scores were level at 79-all with just over five minutes of play remaining before Cairns edged ahead again and when Greg Scott made one of two free throws the home side trailed by just one point with 46 seconds remaining.
The Rockets were on the at- tack with 16.1 seconds left on the clock before losing posses- sion and Cairns made one free throw ? enough for victory.
Life does not get any easier for the Rockets on Sunday when they host competition leaders, Southern Districts Spartans.
