Best part is kids? smiles
ROCKHAMPTON postie Daren Longobardi and his workmates have been working hard this Christmas, but he wouldn't have it any other way. This Christmas the workload for staff at the Musgrave Street Post Office in North Rockhampton has doubled.
Since the last week of November staff have been handling about 46,000 pieces of mail each day, compared to just 23,000 on a normal day.
"This is one of the busiest Christmas periods we've had for a long time,'' Mr Longobardi, 37, said.
While some might think this extra workload would discour- age Mr Longobardi and his fellow posties, it is quite the opposite.
For seven years Mr Longobardi has battled magpies in the spring, the occasional run-in with pet dogs as well as driving around in the heat, but he reckons Christmas makes up for all of that.
"It's the best part of the year for sure,'' he said.
"We get to deliver more than just bills!
"People are happier and want to get their mail, they will come out more often to meet us.''
And what is his favourite part of delivering Christmas joy?
"The smiles on the kids' faces is the best part of the job,'' he said.
