Boy dies but drivers just didn't care

HEARTLESS motorists abused bystanders trying to stop them driving through a section of a busy North Rockhampton road where a 16-year-old boy lay dead.

A car had hit Stephen John Wilkinson moments earlier about 8pm on Friday on Thozet Road.

Not only were motorists unconcerned about his death, but one even went as far as telling the bystanders he did not care and to move aside.

Another took photos of Stephen's body with his mobile-phone camera. Witnesses and nearby residents George and Gwen Phipps said they were disgusted with the behaviour of motorists.

Mrs Phipps said that while she and her husband had not heard or seen the accident, they could not believe people could be so "terrible''. "His body was in the middle of the road and they wanted to keep driving through,'' she said.

"Some of the residents tried to block the street with their cars and they were getting abused and cursed at.''

Mrs Phipps said she was horrified to see one man stand over Stephen's remains and take photos with his mobile phone. "What a ghoul. How sick.''

The teenager had been riding along Thozet Road on his BMX bike when he hit an unknown object ? believed to be either a gate or parked car.
