Callaghan Park tips big crowd
By TONY McMAHON ? ROCKHAMPTON Jockey Club officials are expecting a large festive crowd to pack Callaghan Park racecourse today for one of its biggest meetings of the year ? the Melbourne Cup Day races.
While Flemington will stage a huge on-course race meeting, there will be only four races at Callaghan Park but that matters little.
The Callaghan Park crowd, many just once-a-year racegoers, in the main go trackside to keep in the tradition of the occasion.
For those who may be sufficiently inquisitive to try their luck on the locals, leading Rockhampton jockey Dale Evans could be the one to follow.
Evans has a close affinity with Clem Jackson's Carnaby Springs which resumes in the second race, the Class 1 Handicap (1000m).
He also has an excellent winning chance on Crown Me Some later in the program while Self Opinated, his mount in the final race is considered an each-way prospect.
Bookmakers are preparing for a busy afternoon while television screens have been strategically placed around the Callaghan Park facilities.
