Callow?s flipper not Warne out

EMU Park bowler Gil Callow and Australia's king of spin Shane Warne share a common bond ? they both bowl the flipper.

Callow teamed up with Stan Bates to win the Central Queensland District Men's Bowling Association (CQDMBA) pairs title at Diggers Memorial Bowls Club last weekend.

The leading Emu Park combination produced a nail-biting win over Moura's father-and-son team, Brian and Daniel Mann, in the final.

With the game in the balance, Callow turned the match on its head when he unleashed his mystery flipper ? a faster, turning bowl.

Leading by three shots, Emu Park found themselves down by three on the 16th end before Callow took out two with his flipper to hold on for victory.

Emu Park had to work hard to reach the final, beating Diggers and Gracemere by one shot, while Moura enjoyed wins over Dee and Victoria Park.

Callow and Bates will now represent CQ in the pairs at the zone finals at Gladstone Bowls Club on Saturday week.

Victoria Park's Mike Cotton (singles), Brian Roots, Fred Carrington, Rod Graff and Col James (fours) will also lead the CQ charge.

Teams are to be at Gladstone by 9.30am for a 10am start.
