CBD developments? parking levy doubles

By MIKE SCOTT

LIVINGSTONE Shire Council has more than doubled its car parking levy charged to CBD developments to head off space shortages.

Developers in Yeppoon unable to provide off-street parking will have to pay $18,900 a park, up from $9000. In Emu Park the price will be $11,200.

Councillor John Smith said he would probably cop a "kick in the bum'' for the increase, but it was necessary.

The price was a true reflection of land costs to create parking spaces, he said.

The money collected would be used for future car parking projects.

"There's no room in the CBD.

"The population is going to double and we've got to have parking close to shops because people won't walk.''

The contribution increases took into account construction costs, land values and projected future car parking needs, but the council preferred developments to provide their own onsite spaces, he said.

Consultants Maunsell Australia Pty Ltd were commissioned in 2002 to do a Yeppoon and Emu Park parking study.
