Child sex abuser jailed

By DARRYN NUFER ? A CENTRAL Queensland man who sexually abused five children over a 13-year period was yesterday sentenced to five years' jail.

The 37-year-old, who cannot be named by law to protect his victims, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court to 20 sex offences.

They included numerous counts of indecently treating children aged between five and 10. Some of the offences involved his nieces and a nephew.

The Crown described the offences as predatory in nature where the man abused children within family structures.

The court heard the man had previously served jail time for similar offences.

It heard of multiple counts of oral sex and attempted penetration of young boys.

On one occasion, a pornographic video was played in front of his seven to nineyear-old niece in his care, before she was sexually abused.

Barrister Tom Polley said his client had been sexually abused and exposed to violence for 11 years of his youth.

He had also heavily abused drugs, alcohol and petrol.

In his favour, the guilty plea had meant none of the children were required to give evidence at either committal or trial.

Judge Grant Britton made no recommendation for parole.
