City airport receives good soaking rain

NEARLY 7mm of rain was dumped on Rockhampton's airport in a few hours on Thursday night and yesterday morning.

And north of Rockhampton areas reported 12 millimetres in the same short time.

Although weather forecaster Mike Marrinan said this was not overall an exceptional amount of rainfall, he did say it was above the average amount for such a short time.

"Generally speaking most rainfall is about five millimetres or less,'' he said."This was a result of a rapid moving system that began about 11pm and went to about 2am.''

The system, called a surface front, created heavy cloud cover and an unstable atmosphere, he said.

He also said rain at this time of year had become more common.

But people can look forward to sunny days over the weekend. "It should be fine over the weekend,'' he said.

"Late Sunday and Monday showers in the northern parts of Capricornia are expected.
