Clermont teacher a league legend

CLERMONT school teacher Don Saunders keeps on breaking new ground in rugby league.

Saunders was named the Queensland Cup 10 Year Team lock and captain at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on the weekend.

Selected from a chosen field of 2101 eligible players, Saunders' biggest success was captaining the Toowoomba Clydesdales team which won the competition's inaugural premiership in 1996.

Saunders played for Toowoomba in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

His passion for the game has remained strong, playing for the Clermont Bears in the Central Highlands Rugby League, and last year making a return to the Queensland Cup when he was called up for the Central Comets.

Central was well-represented with centre Steve Bell and winger Heath Egglestone named as starters while front rower Sime Busby was named on the bench.
