Cougar can?t predict winner

CAPRICORN Cougars defender Matt Carrigg is struggling to find a clear favourite in his team's trial game against Brisbane South at Rockhampton's Pilbeam Park tomorrow night.

"I think betting should be suspended on this game, it's a bit of an unknown,'' said Carrigg, who has strong racing industry ties in his family.

Weighing up the odds Carrigg thinks Brisbane will start as favourites, but he said every team always loved to get a win over a Brisbane team.

Carrigg's sister Donna, 17, is an apprentice jockey in Rockhampton, his late father Michael Carrigg was the chief steward at Callaghan Park from 1985-1986 and 1992-1996, and his grandfather Albert Carrigg was a bookmaker on the Gold Coast.

Becoming a jockey was not an option for Carrigg, who turned 26 last Monday, standing at 183cm and weighing 83kg.

Carrigg hopes to become a part-owner of a racehorse one day and he has already held talks with some Nerimbera Brothers football connections, Darren Jeffries and Chris Clarke.

The final make-up for this weekend's Cougars team, is an unknown quantity but with anticipated unlimited interchange all players should get their fair share of game time.

Brisbane Souths will use the game as a pre-season trial.

Joining the Souths line-up are former Central Queensland players Cameron Draper, Chris Griffin, Josh Evans and possibly Reece Veenhoven.

Cougars squad ? Ben Blacker, Craig Porter, Darren Jeffries, Lindsay Dean, Matt Carrigg, Chris Hill, Tristan Fraser, Clayton Rowland, Kenny Robertson, Bradd Dillon, Michael Steere, Alden Gregory, Jamie Malcolmson, Danny Cox, Nick Barker. Coach: Will Burns.
