Council hunts business for zoo funds
THE funding for a $3 million upgrade of the Rockhampton Zoo will include a sponsorship hunt into the corporate jungle.
At last night's city council meeting Cr John Broad revealed a strategy was being formed to approach "big business'' as part of a funding drive to support exciting redevelopment plans for the city-owned zoo.
Cr Broad, the council's parks and recreation chairman, said the funding proposal had followed a recent meeting between senior zoo staff and the Central Queensland Area Consultative Committee.
"We have been inspired to think big,'' he said.
"This (the zoo project) would be a huge boost to regional tourism.
"It will be a great opportunity to seek contributions from these large companies.''
A sponsorship example could be the Qantas Kangaroo Compound or the BHP Mining Wombat Burrow.
"What could McDonald's sponsor,'' Cr Broad speculated.
He said the council would leave no stone unturned in its quest to achieve the ultimate result which was "a top quality boutique zoo''.
He said the project had received in-principal support from the council and the job now was to source the funding.
