Council sets cash limit on new dump

ROCKHAMPTON'S share of the cost of setting up a regional landfill could reach $4 million.

That is the maximum figure the city council is setting itself in a worst-case scenario as it races to find a site before the Lakes Creek Road dump fills.

Cr Tony Williams said the cost of a regional landfill could be anywhere between $6m and $13m, depending on where it was located.

Options include a site between Rockhampton and Gladstone and open-cut mine voids in the Duaringa Shire.

A big problem facing the council is the Environmental Protection Agency setting a closing date of 2011 for the Lakes Creek Road dump while a regional landfill would not be ready until 2013.
