Council to throw party

SENIOR'S Week will be celebrated in style this year.

Rockhampton City Council last night agreed to host a combined shires gathering as part of the celebrations.

The council will also pick up the $12,100 tab for the event, which is scheduled for August 25.

About $8000 will be spent on catering and $2000 on entertainment, plus other expenses such as decorations and bus hire.

The last combined shires gathering was held in Rockhampton in 1999 and attracted almost 500 people from Gladstone, Biloela, Blackwater, Mount Morgan, Gracemere, Yeppoon, Emu Park and Rockhampton.

Mayor Margaret Strelow said she knew how much people looked forward to the gathering and was happy for the city to host it.

The funds will be taken from the next financial year's budget.
