Crane forced to keep runners at home
By TONY McMAHON ? LIKELY favourites Astroflash and Pack Of Gold will be home in their Rockhampton stables tomorrow instead of challenging for laurels in the feature races at the Gladstone Cup meeting.
Owing to a "misunderstanding'', Astroflash was not included in the field for the $10,000 Gladstone Cup (1608m) nor Pack Of Gold for the $5000 Open Handicap (1000m).
Their trainer Tony Crane believed he had declared both horses acceptors with the Trainers Services Centre (TSC) earlier this week.
However, that body, which tapes all conversations from trainers over nominations, acceptances, scratchings and jockey declarations, has rejected Crane's version and has relayed tapes to stewards to confirm this.
Crane said he was "real disappointed'' over the incident. The matter surfaced after the 9.30am acceptance deadline yes- terday when Crane rang the TSC to declare jockeys for both horses.
"It is a misunderstanding but not my fault. Naturally, the owners of both horses are upset,'' Crane said.
After winning the Thangool Cup with Astroflash last Saturday, Crane will be glad to see the end of this week.
Star Gold Coast jockey Glen Colless is the new rider for top Rockhampton sprinter Nessuno in the $100,000 Avitt Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm tomorrow.
While Nessuno drew awkwardly at barrier nine, some of his well-performed rivals also fared badly in the draw.
