Cundy takes great strides

ROCKHAMPTON endurance running champion David Cundy blitzed the field to win the Rockhampton Road Runners Half Marathon on Sunday.

The Australian Masters track champion took advantage of the chilly conditions, finishing the 21.1km course in 1:20:52 ? two minutes faster than last year.

After a couple of years of frustrating injuries, Wayne Whitfield indicated he was on the way back.

He ran into second place in a time of 1:22:40.

Kent Spencer finished third.

In the women's event, Sonya Murphy had a big win, stopping the clock at 1:37:45.

Karin Gaskin claimed second and Lyn Lewis, who is more accustomed to ultra marathons, finished third.

The focus for both winners will now turn to the Gold Coast Marathon in July.

The 10km event at the weekend belonged to Gladstone's Greg and Kay McDiarmid who won the men's and women's races.
