Daniel powers ahead in fast lane

ROCKHAMPTON'S Daniel List is living life in the fast lane.

Not every 13-year-old can boast clocking speeds of about 100kmh over 200m, but this young Rockhampton drag racer is taking a different track in life.

This season List won the Benaraby Raceway's track championship in the junior dragster class.

List first got behind the steering wheel 18 months ago and after passing his licence, through the Australian National Drag Racing Association, was firing ahead.

This year List contested about 13 meetings from Benaraby to Mackay, Willowbank and Sydney.

Equipped with a brake, throttle, no gears, and a lot of power, List had a simple philosophy when he first started racing.

"I didn't want to make a fool of myself,'' he said.

"It was a bit freaky at first.

"I just try as hard as I can and don't think about the person beside you.''

Now he just loves that adrenaline rush ? and the kids at school think he's pretty cool.

List will step into a new car with more power and higher technology next season while this season's car will still hit the track ? with a new paint job.

Younger sister Rebekka, 10, is the next member of the List family to take up drag racing and she wants to race in a hot pink car.

Their dad Gavin also races street car class.

Junior dragsters can start from eight-years-old, but until they turn 10 they can only race at a certain speed.

The new season resumes in February.
