Doherty off to Dally M awards

GRACEMERE'S Eddie Doherty could only think "you beauty'' when he discovered he was going to the NRL's 2005 Dally M awards night in Sydney next week.

A member of the Parramatta Eels fan club, Doherty won the "once in a lifetime opportunity'' through a competition the club ran giving 15 Eels supporters the chance to attend the awards.

"They want us to go in our Parramatta gear and sit in the spectators' gallery,'' Doherty said.

The awards are being held at Sydney Town Hall on Tuesday.

"I'd love to meet my favourite player Nathan Hindmarsh and I'd love to have a chat with Brian Smith (Parramatta coach),'' Doherty said.

Doherty, who is also The Morning Bulletin's resident guru in The Panel in Saturday's editions, will also attend a welcoming function hosted by Mario Fenech.

"I love rugby league and I love Parramatta,'' Doherty said. For the record, Doherty's Dally M medal tip is Wests Tigers captain Scott Prince.

"He was up there in the voting when it went secret and then the Tigers won eight in a row,'' Doherty said.
