Drink-drive idiot sent to prison
A MAN described as a serial "idiot'' because of his horrendous drink-driving history has been jailed for nine months.
Grant William Melling, 42, was caught driving with a 0.3% blood-alcohol reading ? six times the legal limit ? on a busy Rockhampton street two days ago.
In a twist, a woman, 36, who called police about Melling's driving had followed them to where they pulled him over.
She was breathylised and registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.11%.
A man, 26, who was a passenger in Melling's car, was also charged with drink-driving.
Within minutes of Melling's arrest, the man was caught driving on the Capricorn Highway towards Gracemere with a blood- alcohol concentration of 0.21%.
The woman and man will appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court at a date to be decided.
Rockhampton Police Sergeant Noel Melrose described Melling, of no fixed address, as a "complete idiot'' and Magistrate Bronwyn Springer came down hard.
Melling was convicted of driving under the influence of liquor, disqualified driving and fitting plates belonging to another vehicle relating to Wednesday's arrest.
He was also convicted of driving under the influence of liquor, disqualified driving and breach of bail relating to a previous incident.
Magistrate Springer said Melling was a danger to the public. Melling's traffic history from the past five years included six drinkdriving offences and six disqualified-driving offences.
The Morning Bulletin reported in 2001 Melling was jailed for six months for drink-driving and for nine months for driving while disqualified for his seventh drink-driving offence after blowing 0.204%.
