Ex-Rocky ref to officiate Cup qualifier

FORMER Rockhampton football referee Mark Shield is joining the closing stages of the World Cup qualifiers.

Shield, along with Australia's Ben Wilson and Nathan Gibson, will control the first leg of the Trinidad and Tobago play-off against Bahrain in the Sport of Spain on November 12.

The A-League referee will be a familar face for Trinidad and Tobago skipper Dwight Yorke, who plays for Sydney.

Shield was Australia's lone representative at the 2002 World Cup and is among 44 officials short-listed for the final group of 30 to serve at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
