Fifty-six new charges

THREE teenage street kids accused of bashing three people to death have also been charged with rape, torture and deprivation of liberty. The trio faced Toowoomba Magistrates Court yesterday after police laid more than 50 new charges against them. A 17-year-old from Rockhampton, and two 16-yearold youths from Rockhampton and Toowoomba had previously been charged with murder after the triple killing in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, early on Tuesday. The 17-year-old was charged with 22 new counts including five counts of rape, one of attempted rape and torture, deprivation of liberty and robbery with violence.

One of the juveniles was charged with 21 new counts including four counts of rape, one of attempted rape and numerous torture and deprivation of liberty charges. The third teenager faced court on 13 new charges of torture and deprivation of liberty.

None of them entered a plea and they were remanded in custody to reappear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on July 6 for mention. Michael Ross Thompson, 30, and David James Lyons and Tyson Robert Wilson, both 17, were found brutally bashed to death in a unit block in Toowoomba.

Three males, including two of the charged youths, were allegedly seen leaving the crime scene in a van with two teenage girls, who were allegedly sexually assaulted. The van was briefly chased by police before being stopped by road spikes on the Ipswich Motorway at Goodna, near Brisbane. The two girls and one boy were not charged and were released. One of the charged youths was found bashed in the unit. Police have not speculated on a motive for the crime but a friend of one of the victims said one of the accused had told her recently that if his girlfriend broke up with him "someone was going to get killed''.
