Fire threat imminent

By MELANIE PETRINEC

NORTH Rockhampton resi- dent Paul Farrell is always pre- pared for bushfires.

He lives on a property off Rockonia Road ? an area where Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) has urged residents to be aware of the threat of fires spreading over the Berserker Range.

"We just keep the place neat and tidy,'' Mr Farrell said from his home yesterday. "When you live in this kind of environment, you'd be mad not to.''

The concerned resident said that the mountains were "glowing orange" as winds picked up on Tuesday night and the fire began moving closer to the property.

QPWS district manager Pe- ter Moore said that the fire was burning down towards houses.

"It will burn downhill to- wards houses on the East of Rockhampton between Rock- onia Road and Frenchville Road,'' he said yesterday.

"Residents in those areas need to take precautions. "While the fire is burning mildly downhill, it will pick up speed when burning up slopes.''

Mr Moore urged residents to contact emergency services if the blaze was dangerously close to property boundaries.

"If people are concerned and they feel their house is threat- ened, they should call triple 0,'' he said.
