Golden start to athletics season



? CENTRAL Queensland athletes have made a golden start to the new season.

With the countdown to this year's State championships off and running, Rockhampton and Gracemere athletes continued their build-up at the annual Wide Bay Zone Pentathlon at Tannum Sands last weekend.

Gracemere's Emily Keehn joined the medal winners in the under-14 girls.

Keehn claimed gold on 1863 points from team-mate Alex Beitzel (1807), as did North Rockhampton pair Amy Thorsen (1784) and Shannon Hickson (1303).

In the under-14 boys, North Rockhampton's Daniel McLean was crowned champion with a record 2577 points, with North Rockhampton's Ethan Ciesiolka (1840) winning bronze.

Fellow North Rockhampton competitor Cassie Berry also struck gold in the under-10 girls on 895 points.

The annual pentathlon, which involves the 100m sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m events, attracted 140 athletes.
