GPs forced to shut doors of city clinic

WHEN the Voss Clinic opened its doors in Rockhampton 102 years ago, it became a piece of the city's history.

Now Dr Jeff Clark and Dr Steven Connell will also become a part of that history when they close the doors of the Voss Clinic on Friday for the last time.

"It is a little bit sad, the name and the clinic has so much history attached to it,'' Dr Clark said.

Dr Clark and Dr Connell could no longer cope with just two doctors at the clinic.

"We thought we needed more assistance and a registrar to provide a better service,'' Dr Connell said.

The clinic was opened by Dr Paul Voss in East Street, before it moved buildings and changed hands a number of times. It came to rest in Alma Street in 1983.

"When I started here in 1990 there were five doctors here and Dr Connell joined us three or four years later,'' Dr Clark said. "With the shortage of doctors we've been unable to get permanent staff and this building is set up for a much larger practice than we are now,'' Dr Connell said.

Dr Clark and Dr Connell will join the staff at Mt Archer Medical Centre in Dean Street on April 3.

"We have had a mixed reaction from our patients. For some it's more convenient because a number of them live on the Northside and in Yeppoon, but there are some older patients who live around this area who are disappointed we are closing,'' Dr Connell said.
