Gracemere pool hit by thieves over night

GRACEMERE Swimming Pool manager Terry Phelan was devastated to discover a site of destruction after the premises were broken into on Thursday night.

The canteen was extensively damaged after thieves took to the roller door with a star picket, and stock was strewn all over the floor.

Stock, soft drinks, chips, lollies and money were taken from the premises, which Mr Phelan manages with his wife Linda. "It is heartbreaking sometimes,'' Mr Phelan said.

"It's council property and we are only managers here.

"We are trying to provide a service to the community.''

However, the couple have had most of the stock and money returned by Gracemere police.

"The local police here did a marvellous job,'' Mr Phelan said. "We had it all back by Friday afternoon.

"I would also like to thank local businesses for their support and quick response.''

Gracemere police said one adult, 18, had been remanded in custody and charged with break and enter and stealing. Police said three juveniles had also been dealt with by the Juvenile Aid Bureau.
