Graham family on track to success

THE Graham family from Gosford in New South Wales remains on course for further sporting success stories.

Matthew, 11, and sister Heidi, 13, have joined about 150 competitors at the 42nd Australian National Sabot Championships being sailed on Yeppoon's Keppel Bay this week.

Heidi is sailing Double Diamond in the senior one-up division while Matthew is chasing back-to-back titles, with some help from his cousin Vardon Robson, sailing Double Black in the junior two-up division.

Matthew also won a national title crewing for his brother David in the junior two-up divi-sion four years ago.

Sabot sailing has been a way of life for the Graham family for many years.

Their father Stephen, now the Australian National Sabot Council president, and mother Debbie are both former sailors and they are usually busy watching four children compete in this event.

However, Eliza, 16, and David, 14, have now retired, swapping the seas for the slopes ? mogul skiing is now their chosen sport.

They are currently in Japan with the Australian junior freestyle mogul ski team.

Stephen puts his children's success down to believing in your ability and commitment.

And Stephen and Debbie don't mind travelling around the countryside to give their children opportunities to compete.

"They're worth it and they put the effort in ? and it's a good social life,'' he said.
