Greenpeace on war games watch

GREENPEACE yacht Vega has spent the weekend stalking the Shoalwater Bay mili- tary exclusion zone, bearing witness to the joint Australia/United States war games.

Kierin Longridge, peace and nuclear dis- armament campaigner, said the group sailed up to the edge of the exclusion zone on Saturday and during the night to witness and document the exercise dubbed Talis- man Sabre.

"We heard an explosion around 5pm (Saturday) but we couldn't see anything,'' he said about Green- peace's observations.

After its initial observation of the exclusion zone, Vega joined about 10 Central Queensland boats for a peace flotilla at North Keppel Island yesterday.

Yeppoon resident Karen Jones, from Citizens Against Depleted Ura- nium Use (CADUU), took the cata- maran Rainbow to the island to meet the Vega.

The Rainbow was decked out in the Italian "pace'' peace flag, a ban- ner reading "Peace Earth, Peace to all the Universe,'' as well as Tibetan prayer flags.

"We don't intend to do anything radical,'' she said about the flotilla.
