Hitting the Mark with a big New Year?s bang

ROCKHAMPTON speedway enthusiast Mark Hogan is bracing himself to bring in the New Year with a bang at the Rockhampton Showgrounds tonight.

Hogan's Ford Falcon station wagon has received a brief reprieve from used cars death row to enter the arena for the Rockhampton Saloon Car Club's New Year's Eve Crasharama.

The 31-year-old knows exactly what type of car is needed for this punishment.

"You need something big and something strong ? and you need 90% luck,'' Hogan said.

Preparing for his 15th crasharama Hogan is one of about 25 starters.

Some arrive with a plan of attack as they sit in their cars, wearing neck braces and helmets, with their noses facing the outside wall waiting for the green light to signal the start of mayhem.

Cars reverse into action and plans quickly go out the window.

Hogan said the winner was usually lucky to last about 20 minutes.

A full support program also hits the track tonight with racing starting at 6.30.
