Hobby a sight for sure eyes

TIMES have changed since Rockhampton's Vern Alexander joined the Rockhampton Small Bore Rifle Club 50 years ago.

Alexander, 81, started shooting with a 22.22 Cooee Mowhawk rifle when he was 18.

"My friend wasn't 18 then so I got the rifle instead.''

Back then rifles were a lot cheaper. "A new 303 was about three pounds 15 ? that's probably about $7.50,'' he said.

It is a much different sport now with the club celebrating its 50th anniversary on September 3.

Their anniversary shoot will be a far cry from the days when the club was shooting in the middle of Rockhampton.

On July 18, 1955, the club held its first shoot at the drill hall on the corner of Alma and Archer streets.

Any former club members interested in joining the anniversary shoot can contact Kevin Ramm on 4928?7686.
