Homeless man faces court sex charges

A 23-YEAR-OLD man held a pair of scissors to the throat of a young woman and sexually assaulted her at the foot of the Fitzroy Bridge, a court heard yesterday.

The man appeared before Rockhampton Magistrates Court on two counts of sexual assault and one of assault with intent to commit rape.

It's alleged the man met the 22year-old victim as she walked along Fitzroy Bridge around 8pm on Saturday and asked her if she wanted something to drink or smoke.

The court heard he then led her to the bottom of a nearby set of stairs before knocking her to the ground.

She allegedly struggled with him but he managed to hold her down and proceeded to touch her underneath her top and inside her pants.

The court heard he then allegedly produced a pair of scissors from his back pack and threatened to kill her if she did not have sex with him.

She was able to escape as he reached for a nearby cask of wine and ran along the bridge until she was picked up by police.

Police prosecutor Constable Calvin Gnech opposed bail saying the accused did not have a fixed address and was at risk of re-offending.

"The nature in which these charges have taken place is quite serious,'' he said.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy denied bail until the next court appearance on March 20.
