Hospital reduces health services

SERVICES will be reduced at Rockhampton Hospital from Monday following a statewide shortage of doctors.

In a statement released yesterday afternoon, the hospital announced services would be reduced in Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and Ophthalmology areas to ensure patient safety and a safe working environment for hospital staff.

A Rockhampton Hospital spokesperson said the hospital would continue to provide emergency services in those areas and was negotiating with local private hospitals for patients to receive surgery in private facilities at no extra cost to the patient.

The spokesperson said it was still unknown how many and which type of surgery the private hospitals could cover.

"The most important issue is the health and safety of our patients and our staff.
