Jockeys scratch races

THANGOOL Race Club oficials, trainers, patrons and sponsors are "spitting chips'' over the decision of jockeys who deemed the course unsafe for racing there on Saturday.

Former outstanding jockey Mark Lehmann, now a TRC committeeman, galloped a horse on the course proper just after 5am Saturday and considered the track safe.

But at 2pm, nine hours after the inspection, jockeys voted not to ride.

Club president Pat Brennan said he was "absolutely dumfounded''.

"We trial galloped early so as to advise trainers from Taroom, Moranbah and elsewhere that the track was safe and racing would proceed. Then this happens. I've been around here for ages and the track was safe. Even the tyre marks of my fourwheel drive did not mark the track.
